I have been anticipating this album ever since I first heard of its planned release from Cosmic Disco. Perhaps it was its pairing with the above album cover, which showcases a subtly lascivious physique, which reminded me to pursue it. After I thought all was lost, I did finally get a hold of it and here it is. Afrobutt is the moniker of London-based disco-wonderman Stevie Kotey, who regularly releases leftfield electronic music on his own label, Bear Entertainment. This album, Kotey’s debut on UK label Electric Minds, is actually a collection of re-edits which cleverly combines dance styles across a spectrum, bringing disco back to the melting pot it always was. Throughout the record there is a strong calypso rhythm laced with afrobeat percussion, even as many tracks are solidly cosmic disco. Album opener Urgent Workout Required is a funky disco bouncer, and songs like Torro de Butt and Morning Bump can get pretty raunchy at times. The whole album is a bountiful collection of chuggy jungle beats with space disco fervor. It sounds at once fresh and timeless, like Lindstrøm covered by Daniele Baldelli. Make no mistake about it, it is disco to the core, and as tacky/wunderful as the cover may seem, the songs rival its glitzy splendor.

Best Tracks: Urgent Workout Required, Torro de Butt, Disco Mudma, Feast Your Eyes, Banger Disco, Morning Bump, Wunderbutt

This here record by Eero Johannes, a new addition to Mark Paradinas’ Planet Mu roster, comes to us from the playfully experimental and remarkably innovative electronic scene in Scandinavia, or Helskini, Finland, to be exact. It is a region that has made its name in recent years for wittily combining fresh electronic sounds with pop sensibilities, and the breadth of genres and styles cropping up seems sprawling, but paradoxically concentrated around a serious tendency to want to have fun, seriously. From this comes Eero Johannes’ self-titled synthetic funk masterpiece. While at first the sparse, lo-fi electronic beats might scare one off with their alien and unapologetic sound, upon repeat listenings (read: second listening), the listener will find the candy, Pop Rocks synth squeaks infectiously delightful. Eero Johannes is a headliner on the new Scandinavian skweee scene, an electro genre typified by synthetic funk sounds and one which found its roots and following through general online hype, message board buzz, and music blog incest. Other artists such as Beem and Mesak use the same synthy chipper funk sounds, but for darker or softer ends. Eero Johannes’ album is unabashedly deep electro with his skweee stylings used to give the whole package a spry, ebullient attitude. I didn’t quite realize how thick some of these tracks are until my re-reintroduction a few nights ago, but after listening to album highlights We Could Be Skweeeroes, Lipton Service Boy, Finnrexin, Mobile 363, and Katt Witt 700 Watts (a very short list), I am certain you all will agree that this is one of the sexiest albums to come out of the frozen netherworld in a while.

This album is nothing new, but it will never grow old. Junior Senior has a talent for creating insanely catchy, upbeat dance songs (though they have little talent for writing lyrics). One of the most euphoric albums ever (from Denmark!). It sounds like it should be a greatest hits album in the way that every track has an inherent familiarity and greatest-ness. Sidenote: we’ll never see a Junior Senior greatest hits because they BROKE UP (WTF? It’s like breaking up Hall & Oates or peanut butter & jelly) although maybe I can still see them live (REUNION TOUR???). Anyway…the album’s funky-fresh, poppy, romantic but never sappy, and groovier than James Brown dancin’ on the Soul Train. It continues (& ends) the legacy of moving yr feet…RIP Junior Senior!

(btw Jeppe Laursen [aka "Senior" aka guy on the right] looks so creepy)

This Denmark synthpop band has been a favorite of mine for awhile. They might be hard to get into because of the singer’s weird voice but THAT MAKES THINGS INTERESTING. The flow of the album is kinda weird…the way it starts isn’t representative of how it ends up being. But it’s poppy and funky and fresh2death, so you gotta listen & yr prolly gonna wanna dance.
